FAQ
What is green tea?
All tea comes from the same species of
plant, Camellia Sinensis; the difference being in the processing. Green tea is
lightly steamed and minimally hand processed to produce a light, meadow-y
clean tea with high levels of antioxidants.
What is oolong tea?
Again, it’s in the processing. A short
drying time produces partially fermented leaves that are hand rolled creating
a delicious, golden brew.
What is herbal tea?
Herbal tea is made in much the same
way as tea is made from the Camellia Sinensis plant. Herbal tea, however, is
made by blending delicious herbs, spices, and flowers. Also, herbal tea does
not usually contain any caffeine.
What is black tea?
The process to make black tea uses
fully fermented leaves. They are then dried and hand rolled to bring out the
full character of the leaf. Rich, deep favor in a beautiful amber color.
How are black teas flavored?
Ashbys uses the finest blend of pure
black teas from Kenya, Ceylon, and Indonesia for all of the flavored teas. The
extracts used to flavor the teas are a combination of both natural and
artificial flavorings. Combining these two types of flavors brings the best to
Ashbys flavored teas; resulting in a wonderfully enhanced natural aroma and
flavor that will remain with the tea for a long time.
How are the decaffeinated teas made?
Ashbys decaffeinated teas are made
using the European Process. In this process the tea leaves are steeped in hot
water, which removes the caffeine. The water is then treated to neutralize the
caffeine and returned to the tea leaves. The leaves are then dehydrated back
to their original state, preserving all the natural flavors.
How should I store my tea if I purchase it in bulk?
Place a portion of your bulk purchase
in your tea tin or other darkened container for daily use. The natural flavors
and aroma of your bulk purchases will best be preserved by keeping the
remainder of the tea in the foil pouch that it came in. Keep the bag tightly
wrapped with rubber bands or place it inside a large plastic bag. The foil bag
will keep your tea fresh for a long time.
What is Chai Tea?
Chai is becoming quite popular in the
US, but for over 5,000 years the people of India have enjoyed chai on a daily
basis. Chai tea is infused with black tea, spices, and herbs. A variety of
spices are used but almost all chai contains cardamom and honey. David Rio
Chai Teas are all instant mixes. They can be made with water or milk and
served hot or cold. Get

How much caffeine is in Chai?
Caffeine content depends on a number
of variables, but as a rule of thumb, a black tea chai contains between 10-15
milligrams per 6 ounce cup. For sake of comparison, the same size cup of
coffee contains about 45 milligrams of caffeine.
Why is David Rio Chai named after animals?
The company loves animals and supports
animal organizations such as Cat Tales (an endangered species rescue
organization), the San Mateo Peninsula Humane Society (a fabulous humane
society with an open door policy to accept any and all animals), and Amazing
Greys - Retired Racers (a group that helps adopt greyhounds after their racing
days are over).
Is David Rio Chai Non-dairy?
David Rio makes two versions of chai.
One is Power Chai which is simply a combination of evaporated cane juice,
spices, tea and salt. The other is our Endangered Species line. We use a
premium non-dairy creamer as a milk substitute. The non-dairy creamer does
contain sodium caseinate, a milk derivative. However, if your concern is
lactose intolerance, you should not have a problem. We have one staff member
who is lactose intolerant, and he drinks a lot of Tiger Spice Chai!
