Tea Party Beanie Cap Decorating Ideas

Garden Party Teas has added crocheted beanie caps to the ever growing selection of tea party hats. They are lovely to wear as is. But if you are looking for a tea party activity, decorating a beanie cap may be jut the right activity for your girls. This precious six year old has decorated a beanie cap in her favorite color, lavender! We've photographed the steps and provided commentary to give you some decorating ideas. and that perhaps a few hat decorating suggestions would be helpful.

Assemble equipment:
  • Beanie Cap
  • Ribbon*
  • Bow or Barrette
  • Scissors
  • Lighter or matches (optional)
  • Measure the length of ribbon needed and cut at an angle. Weave the ribbon in and out around the cap through the openings in the crochet.

As the ribbon is being woven through the openings in the crochet, the cap will bunch up. When this happens stop the weaving. Securely hold the end of the ribbon being used to do the weaving and stretch the cap over the long end of the ribbon.

Little crafters will most likely need help during this process.
When the weaving is complete, stretch the beanie cap and adjust the ribbon so that both ends are equal. Our ribbon was a bit too wide so some adjusting was needed to achieve a pleasing appearance.

    Assure a perfect fit:
This step will require adult assistance. Have the crafter put the hat on her head. If the hat is to be completed with a bow, tie it now. If the cap is to be enhanced with a flower or barrette, snip the ends of the ribbon, allowing an extra inch on each end to overlap and glue the ribbon in place. Remove cap and secure ends.*
The ribbon woven through this beanie was tied in a bow.
Then a barrette was clipped on to the top of the bow.
Our little model wanted to wear the bow on her beanie in the back.
Decorations on the side are nice, too. Wouldn't you agree?

*For this hat a white chiffon wired craft ribbon was used as it matched the barette our little girl had selected. A grosgrain ribbon 1/2 to 1 inch wide would also be beautiful. Plan on 1 to 1 1/2 yards of ribbon per hat depending on how the cap is to be finished. If you are making a small bow out of the same ribbon you will need enough ribbon to go around the child's head plus 24 inches to tie a generous bow. If you plan to add a barrette or a flower, add three inches to the head measurement, overlap the ribbon and secure with glue, a glue dot, sticky backed velcro or a low temp glue gun.
